The answer... without the scenic route
| Route | Potential advantage | Main tradeoff | Usually fits | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Open marketplace | broad exposure and a defined listing process | more inquiry filtering and variable support | assets that benefit from reach and sellers willing to manage messages | | Curated marketplace or broker | qualification, positioning help, and guided process | higher fee, eligibility limits, or exclusivity may apply | documented assets where qualified buyer access and support justify the cost | | Private sale | control over buyer list, confidentiality, and commercial terms | seller must manage qualification, diligence, documents, escrow, and closing team | a known credible buyer or a seller with experienced professional support |
Inside this guide 8 parts
Compare the three routes
| Route | Potential advantage | Main tradeoff | Usually fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open marketplace | broad exposure and a defined listing process | more inquiry filtering and variable support | assets that benefit from reach and sellers willing to manage messages |
| Curated marketplace or broker | qualification, positioning help, and guided process | higher fee, eligibility limits, or exclusivity may apply | documented assets where qualified buyer access and support justify the cost |
| Private sale | control over buyer list, confidentiality, and commercial terms | seller must manage qualification, diligence, documents, escrow, and closing team | a known credible buyer or a seller with experienced professional support |
These are general categories. Read the actual service terms. A platform calling itself “curated” does not tell you exactly what it checks.
Use a structured venue when process support matters
An established on-market route may fit many sellers, especially on a first deal. The reason is practical: unqualified inquiries, fake proof, improvised escrow, and confused handoffs can consume time or create loss.
A structured venue may help with:
- Standard listing fields and asset review.
- Buyer identity or funds checks.
- Brokered introductions and calls.
- A known diligence sequence.
- Escrow coordination and acceptance steps.
- Support when the parties disagree about completion.
Ask what the venue actually does, who performs each check, and what remains your responsibility.
Use a private process only with real controls
Private does not have to mean casual. A credible private process can be more formal than a marketplace listing.
Minimum controls should include:
- Verified identity and authority for both parties.
- Evidence of funds appropriate to the stage.
- Confidentiality and controlled disclosure.
- A written description of assets, excluded items, representations, obligations, and closing conditions.
- A reputable escrow arrangement with verified instructions.
- A transfer plan based on current YouTube and Google account mechanics.
- Qualified legal and tax advice where the transaction warrants it.
Reddit messages, a crypto payment request, and “trust me” do not become a closing process when placed in the same group chat.
Score fit before choosing
Rate each route from 1 to 5 on:
- Qualified buyer reach.
- Expected net proceeds.
- Confidentiality.
- Seller workload.
- Process and dispute support.
- Experience with channels or similar assets.
- Flexibility of terms.
Weight the factors that matter most. A seller who values confidentiality may reasonably choose a smaller buyer process. A seller who wants maximum exposure may accept more filtering work.
The part people underestimate
Scams, phishing, poor buyers, disputes, and bad terms can exist around known marketplaces too. Confirm the domain, account, broker identity, escrow instructions, and agreement. Keep communication in verified channels.
No route removes the need to read what you sign.
The next decision
If a marketplace route fits, compare the actual audiences and processes. Next, review Roman's four source marketplaces without assuming that last year's fees, eligibility, or inventory still applies.
Keep these three things
The short version
- A marketplace, broker, and private process exchange reach, control, support, workload, and cost differently.
- Structured venues can help first-time sellers, but verify exactly what they vet and manage.
- A private sale needs stronger controls, not fewer controls.
