The answer... without the scenic route
YouTube's help documentation currently describes a seven-day ownership period before an owner can become primary owner of a Brand Account. Channel permissions and Brand Account roles are different systems, and a transfer may require configuration changes. Review the current Brand Account owner guidance (opens in a new tab) and channel-permissions limitations (opens in a new tab) for the exact account setup.

Understand the transfer boundary first
YouTube's help documentation currently describes a seven-day ownership period before an owner can become primary owner of a Brand Account. Channel permissions and Brand Account roles are different systems, and a transfer may require configuration changes. Review the current Brand Account owner guidance (opens in a new tab) and channel-permissions limitations (opens in a new tab) for the exact account setup.
That technical feature does not mean YouTube has broadly approved buying and selling channels. The YouTube Terms of Service (opens in a new tab) separately restrict selling parts of the Service or Content except as authorized. Check the current terms, the transaction, the account configuration, and qualified legal advice where needed.
Never ask for a seller's Google password. Use authorized roles and least-privilege access.
Build a read-only operating baseline
With explicit authorization, capture the metrics you will use after closing:
- Views, watch time, estimated revenue, and upload count by month.
- Traffic sources and top videos at comparable ages.
- Audience retention, monthly audience, and returning behavior.
- Current claims, strikes, restrictions, sponsor obligations, and scheduled uploads.
- Existing production workflow, contractor responsibilities, and costs.
Record the date and access source. Do not export or share data beyond what the seller and agreement permit.
Prepare drafts, vendors, and decision gates
You can build a proposed title bank, draft a 30-day content calendar, outline scripts, and identify potential contractors. Keep every action conditional until closing.
A useful readiness checklist is:
Baseline captured
+ first 3 ideas approved in draft
+ rights and source plan documented
+ production capacity confirmed
+ upload quality checklist ready
= prepared to operate after authority transfersPaid contractor tests should use your own or properly authorized materials. Do not expose confidential channel data to applicants.
The honest caveat
Do not publish, remove videos, replace recovery methods, link payment accounts, contact sponsors as the owner, or make public promises before the closing sequence authorizes it. AdSense account ownership itself is not transferable. A channel may change its linked AdSense for YouTube association under current rules, which is a separate process with its own limits. See YouTube's association guidance (opens in a new tab) and Google's AdSense ownership rule (opens in a new tab).
If the deal fails, your preparation should unwind cleanly without damaging the seller's channel or exposing private information.
Your next move
Next step: Turn that plan into a repeatable production system. Section 2 shows where AI helps, where human judgment is essential, and where every output needs a quality gate.
Continue to Build a Human and AI YouTube Production Workflow.
Keep these three things
The short version
- Use authorized waiting time for analysis and reversible preparation, not early control.
- Treat Brand Account transfer tooling, YouTube's Terms, and AdSense association as separate issues.
- Create a dated baseline and conditional 30-day plan before the handoff completes.
